My period surprised me!!

Periods are a natural part of a woman’s life, occurring every month as the body prepares for pregnancy.  They are a marker of health as important in some ways as your blood pressure or heart rate. And this is important at all times of a woman’s life not only during times when she is trying to have babies.

PMS (Premenstrual syndrome)

However, when the symphony of hormones gets out of tune, periods can also come with a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms, including cramping, bloating, mood swings, and headaches. In some cases, these symptoms can be severe enough to disrupt daily activities and even compromise quality of life.

I often have conversations with women about their cycles where they say things like, ‘I only have the normal headaches for a few days before my period’ or ‘I have to take medication for pain for the first three days of my period, but that’s normal isn’t it?’.  These are signs that the hormonal system is out of balance and in particular that oestrogen is dominant compared to progesterone. And I have to say that normal and common have certainly been confused in many settings but none more so than when it is to do with women’s periods.

Natural approach

For those women who prefer a natural approach to improved health and and symptom management there is an alternative, chiropractic care.  As Chiropractors we are trained to assess and adjust musculoskeletal problems, including those that affect the reproductive system. Take Maddie for example, she is 35 with two young girls who are 5 and 2. She is breastfeeding the little one and is looking for schooling options for her 5 year old. Maddie works part time and runs her own little business from home. Her husband works in Brisbane so she looks after her girls most of the time. It is a busy lifestyle.

Maddie has had headaches and monthly migraines since before having her daughters, the migraines come two days before her period and her headaches are daily or every few days. She has done yoga and meditation for years, eats well and is very aware of avoiding chemicals in her home and food. So she couldn’t understand why she was laid up for up to 3 days each month with migraines, abdominal cramping and low back pain.
